  • WOORRY-No-More budget friendly wines under R100.

Haven’t we all been worrying enough with everything that has been going on around the world. The year 2020 is one for the books and we are definitely going to be part of the “based on true events” storytellers. For myself, life has went from grabbing a bottle of wine and sipping on a red after a long day at work or work week, to staring at an empty home cellar because the on and off alcohol ban in South Africa has caught many people including myself off-gourd. This has become a rather difficult time for wine lovers like myself who enjoy trying out new wines and visiting wine farms specifically for wine tasting. It has become even more challenging for our much-loved wine producers, the SA wine industry which supports 269 000 livelihoods and generates 55b in revenue for the country. I am aware of the fact that some of my close friends refer to me as a wine snob especially when it comes to red wine ( in my defence, this is due to my love for good aged red wine and MCC which can be pricey). However, I still believe that one can find good quality wine at a reasonable price. We just said goodbye to the "alcohol banned and dry bank accounts JanuWorry" and many are looking for the best wine they can buy without blowing the rest of the budget. And some of us have made this a hobby and for some even a career—of that search, tasting their way through many brands and bottles to find the wines that truly deliver the full experience. A lot of thought can go into choosing that perfect bottle of wine. But when presented with dozens of options, that decision isn’t always easy. I am by no means a wine expert, but I do love a good glass of wine. Since it can be a little overwhelming picking out a bottle of wine, I thought I’d share a few budget friendly wines to help narrow down your list. Well, WorryNoMore!! My selection of Top Affordable Wines available from the Estates, as well as most wine retailers and online includes a few of my favourites, as well as recommendations from fellow wine lovers. Red Wine ANURA CABERNET SAUVIGNON 750ML R99.99 A rich, ripe, full Cabernet Sauvignon with plenty of dark fruit, plums and black currant flavour characteristics. Restrained use of French oak allows the fruit of this wine to remain centre stage. The oak contributes a spicy, toasty, cigar box character to the wines mid palate and finish. BLOEMENDAL WATERLILY PINOTAGE 2016 750M R99.99 Rich colours of ruby plum and purple shades are complemented by aromas of black cherry, plum with hints tobacco and cloves. A rich palate with smooth tannins. KLEINE ZALZE CELLAR SELECTION 2017 PINOTAGE 750ML R99.99 Very pleasant Pinotage with deep red colour. Blackberries, black currant and forest fruits in taste. Full bodied wine. High acidity and nice tannins. Long spicy and oaky finish. FIRST SIGHTING SHIRAZ 750ML R99.00 Signature white pepper, blackberry and mocha notes give way to a full silky palate and long spicy finish balanced by savoury tannins. HARTENBERG CABERNET SAUVIGNON / SHIRAZ 750ML R99.99 Hartenberg’s Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz is an unfussy, but good quality wine that I have one word for, “moreish”! It offers a nose infused with plenty of spice and pepper as well as juicy berry aromas. An elegant wine follows on the palate that is packed full of berry richness. The balance of oak and fruit is sophisticated, leading to a smooth, well-structured and long aftertaste. AA BADENHORST SECATEURS RED 750ML R99.99 The aromas are perfumed, peppery, spicey, smokey and exhibit ripe red fruit notes. As always the palate texture of this style of wine is supple, smooth on the entry but with enough grip to end dry and refreshing. In the mouth the texture and fineness of fruit tannin and drinkability of the wine is immediately evident Blend: Shiraz, Grenache, Cinsault. FAIRVIEW STELLENBOSCH MERLOT 2018 750ML R99.99 Bright ruby red in colour with aromas of red berries, plum and mocha. Medium bodied palate with juicy tannins, classic Merlot red fruit flavours and with a harmoniously soft finish. White Wine AA BADENHORST SECATEURS CHENIN 750ML R77.99 Bright, light yellow. Peachy fruit salad and spice aromas are enlivened by grapefruit pith. Rich and silky, with a slightly sweet impression nicely countered by harmonious acidity. The aromas on the nose showcase an abundance of flint with orange blossom, white stone fruit and honey on the nose. CEDERBERG CHENIN BLANC 750ML R99.99 The Cederberg style Chenin Blanc offers beautiful layers of melon, grapefruit and fleshy white pear. Four months lees contact ensured a mouth coating creaminess on the palate with a lively crisp acidity to finish off. BOSCHENDAL BLANC DE NOIR 750ML R59.99 On the nose this wine presents complex red berry fruit notes. On the palate, an appealing pale salmon colour leads to bright red fruit, strawberry and red berries. Good freshness, balance and drinkability. Crisp and dry, but with a pleasant hint of fruit sweetness. THELEMA SAUVIGNON BLANC 750ML R89.99 Unwooded and well-balanced, lovely fresh melon and grapefruit flavours, with a full, zesty palate, all in perfect balance. DE MORGENZON DMZ SAUVIGNON BLANC 750ML R94.99 This wine has a pale, bright gold colour with green reflections. Upfront aromatics of passion fruit and citrus greet the nose following through to a rich palate yielding ripe fruit flavours with a gentle nettle edge. A brisk acidity and stony minerality give natural freshness and length. SIMONSIG GEWURZTRAMINER 750ML R99.99 This sunshine wine displays a bright golden straw colour. Attractive notes of white Turkish delight and rose petals. Succulent notes of litchi and pear nectar dances on the palate. The harmony between the acidity and various elements of fruit creates a synergy of lingering fruit aromas on the palate brilliantly clear colour makes a refreshing and crisp statement. Vrede en Lust White Mischief 2018 750ML R99.99 An abundance of tropical fruit and floral notes on the nose followed by hints of white pear and fruit salad on the palate.
